Evaluation

I was asked to create a front cover for a college magazine. When I was assigned this I thought of a subject and the first one was textiles, so then I thought of fashion. So I decided to do a fashion college magazine. I would base the magazine on 16-19 year old female students and I thought of doing something simple but bold at the same time. Then I analyised 2 different college magazines using LIIAR, then I anaylised a fashion magazine, As I thought if im doing a fashion college magazine, I need to know what sort of images they use and what they put on there front covers too. Then I looked at what a college magazine has on it, by doing this I would know what to put on it myself. After that I anaylised a content page too, as I had to do a draft for my college magazine. Then I started to think of ideas, I thought about colours that worked well together, I looked up other fashion magazines to see what images they had on there magazine and college magazines to see what stories they had, then when it came to creating the magazine I knew I could mix both the ideas together to create a fashion college magazine. I then used photoshop to edit my photo's change the text and blend things so they stood out. If I had to improve or if i was to do this task again I would have changed the image, I would have took it in a different location and maybe changed the subject to just a general college magazine instead of a fashion college magazine.

Final Front Cover

This is my final front cover for my college magazine.

Photo's I Never Used

Photographs

Image 1 - The main reason for me not using this image is because there is no meaning to it. Its too simple and wouldnt realate to a perticular subject, E.G sport. Another reason is because of the facial expression, you would never normally see this pose on a front of a magazine. The background would have made it really easy to work with but the picture didnt stand out so I didnt use it.
Image 2 - The reason i didnt choose this image is because the background is too fussy, it would have made it hard to edit and the image doesnt really have a purpose or it doesnt really mean anyhing. There are also a lot of objects around the image of the girl, and on magazine covers, they tend to be simple and not have a lot of props or other images in the background or beside them.
Image 3 - I was going to use this image but I realized not too for many reason. One of them being that the image is dull and dark, it also has been taken at a side angle and the angle creates shadows. Another reason is again too much fuss around the background, it would have made it hard to write about certain subjects with them posters being in the background.

Main Ideas For Front Cover Of A Magazine

  • One of the ideas I would like to use is the idea of a college fashion magazine, I was thinking of using just a picture of a simple girl, with make up on as the main image, like most magazines have now. The main story would be about how to style yourself for college and the other main stories would be about the college and fashion. Colours I could use for the magazine, pink, yellow and aqua. The reason I was thinking of using these colours is because they stand out and make the magazine bold, and they work together well. Other colours I could use; peach, pale green and pale pink, these colours are neautral and make the magazine look fresh. Plus autuum is coming up and these colours work well with this season.
Names For The Magazine I Could Use For This Idea
  • Student Fashion
  • Student Vogue
  • W1619 (This means Wyke and the target audience which is 16-19)
  • TEEN ( I like this one best as its simple)

  • Another idea I could use is just a general college magazine all about Wyke and the openings of the new buildings. I could use an image of someone either working or holding books, or I could get an image of someone outside/inside the college. I would use an image of someone aged 16-19 as this is the target audience. The best colours to use would be Green, Purple and Black because these are the main colours of Wyke College. They would make the magazine formal which it needs to be.
Names For The Magazine I Could Use For This Idea
  • Grade
  • College Campus
  • Wyke M (M stands for Magazine)
  • Wyke Magazine
  • WCCM (Wyke Campus College Magazine)

Ideas For My College Magazine

Both of these magazines are something like what I would like to achieve as my end result. This is because I love the colours used and think that they work really well together, I also like the picture on the second magazine, I think it stands out, and makes people want to buy the magazine. The white background is something I hope will look good on mine too, as I think it mkaes the magazine still simple but at the same time eye catching. The font used is something aswell I hope to use, its so simple but the colours make them stand out, and its so easy to read.

Contents Page Draft

This is how I would do my contents page. I would have a masthead called CONTENTS, I would have two images, I wouldnt want too much fuss on the contents page.

Magazine Front Cover Draft

I think this is how I am going to lay out my magazine, I think this seems formal and easy to read, it can still grab people's attention and everything fits well into place. I only want one main image like most magazines do have and I dont want too muc fuss on the front cover, I want it to be simple like most other college magazines. I also though of sticking all the cover stories at one side, this way they are not blocking the image and everyone will be able to see it clearly unlike most other college magazines, which is one of there downfalls. This is just an idea for a front cover.

Contents Page Analysis

The reason I am going to analise this contents page is because then I know what goes into a magazine, I will know most of the stories and this will give me a rough idea on what to put on the front.

This contents page is very similar to the front cover of the magazine, it has the same colour scheme running through, it also has relevant images too. Again the contents page is still very simple but very informative. it has a welcome brief at the side to welcome the audience into the magazine. There is also a section called regulars which draws in people who usually buy the magazine to see what the recent news articles are. There are only 2 main images, not too much fuss. There are also 2 cartoon images, the badge logo and the yellow bubble to make the piece of text stand out. There are page numbers with the stories beside them, this is very orginzed and helps the audience track thier way through the magazine. The images are also there to show other stories. There are also other logo's like the recycle logo, this shows its recyclable. There is also small print, this is so they dont have to put it on the front of the magazine which people will not want to read or see on the front.

Whats On A College Magazine?

All college magazines are basically the same. They all tend to be simple and straight to the point, but they all the same type of content on the front page.
Masthead- They all have a Masthead, this is the title of the magazine, and they all tend to stand out and make you look at the magazine.
Image- This is something that will also grab your attention, on this exersize we have to use a mid close up shot, so this will also grab your attention even more because its just of the top of the body and not the full body shot, which is usually a lot further away.
Sub Headings - These are other stories on the magazine that are not the main headline, this also need to stand out so people want to buy the magazine to read whats inside.
Headline - This is the main piece of text on a magazine and needs to be good and catch peoples attention to think they want to buy the magazine.
Date and Price - This always needs to be on a magazine, other wise people wont know if to pick it up if not, also the date so they know if the magazine is up to date with information, no.one wants to buy an out of date magazine.

Idea's For College Magazine

  • Fashion College Magazine
The reason I thought of this as an idea is because many students who go to college are women. Many women would find this magazine interesting, but the only negative is that men wouldnt find this magazine appealing. So I dont think Im going to use a fashion magazine
  • Sports College Magazine
The reason I thought of maybe doing a sports college magazine is because sports is a very popular subject chosen at Wyke, so the magazine would appeal to a large audience and it would also stand out to many people. The only downfall is that not everyone at the college is interested in sport, so it doesnt cover the whole college
  • General College Magazine
Just a general college magazine is also a good idea. Then it could suit to all age ranges, and it could inform and educate all the students at wyke.
  • Music College Magazine
A music magazine would be a great idea because everyone likes music, and since the main age range at Wyke is 16-19, it shows that the magazine would appeal to this audience because its this age range the most that listen to music. This magazine has no main downfalls and could suit to everyones taste.

Fashion Magazine Anaylsis Using LIIAR

The reason I am analysing a fashion magazine is because It was an idea of mine to do a fashion college magazine, and I thought it if I anaylised this, it would help me when it comes to designing my magazine. It also has a lot of similarities with a college magazine.

Language - On this magazine there is a masthead, the masthead is the title of the magazine in a white font 'Vogue'. There is a date and price next to this, also in a white font. The subheading are in a theme of colour, hot pink, orange and white. The colour theme matches the one of the subheadings. 'Cheryls fresh start'. Since the colours are fresh, this really matches the colour scheme and the image. There is an image of Cheryl cole holding flowers which also go with the same slogan.
Institution - The institution is Vogue. This institution focus's on fashion and the final product is just about fashion. The image on the front cover is purley on fashion and when styling Cheryl they knew they had to dress her to the theme of this months magazine.
Ideology - The ideology of this magazine is to inform people about the latest fashion trends and stories. It also gives style advice, and tells you whats going on in the world of fashion.
Audience - The audience for this magazine is people ages 16-40, this is because this magazine has been running for such a long time. Also teenagers like this magazine to look at the cover stars and to flick through the fashion advertisements. People who have a wide interest in fashion will also buy this magazine too, and college students who have either taken fashion or textiles will find this magazine very interesting and educational.
Representation - Beautiful, stylish women are been represented on this cover shot, as Cheryl Cole shows. People will buy this magazine thinking that there will be tips inside on how to be that beautiful or atleast try to look like she does.

Second College Anaylisis Using LIIAR

Language - There is a green masthead and a submasthead saying 'Lifestyle' which in a different colour and font. The reason i think they have used the colour green for the masthead is because green stands out and makes people notice it on a rack of magazines. There is also a website located under the masthead I think the reason it is located there is because its easy to read and find. The date of the magazine is in the right top hand corner, this makes it easy to stand out and so people know the magazine is up to date. There are many subheadings and information. An image also thats bright pink with a bright yellow word which really stands out. All of these will make the magazine stand out and make the target audience want to buy it. The image is of an college student holding books. This image really works well with the magazine name and the concept of the magazine. When people see this image they will instantly recognize that the magazine is to do with education.
Institution -  The institution is College Lifestyle
Ideology - The ideology used in this magazine is education and students, to inform then about whats happening in college and about the college lifestyle
Representation - College students are being represented in this magazine. Education is also being represented and succeeding. Its also represented in a bad way too, its making out all students will be like this with books and that all students are all smart, but they are not all like that.

College Magazine Anaylisis using LIIAR

I am anaylising this magazine because this is an average educational magazine which will be something like what I will be doing, by anaylising this magazine, I will get some ideas of what I should and should not do on mine

Language - The magazine is a really simple magazine, There is only one image with barely no writing. There is a large blue and green gradient masthead. This masthead stands out and is readable. There is also a coverline reading 'Ready for class', this also matches with the colour scheme of the masthead, making this also stand out. There is also 3 stories at the top, in a different colour, these also stand out but not too much to draw too much attention from the rest of the magazine, the stories are postitioned at the top of the magazine, making them easy to spot. There is an image of a young teenage girl wearing comedy glasses and microphone but in a school uniform, this goes well with the topic of the magazine. Date and website clearly stated in the right hand corner of the magazine, and a logo and the name of the company that runs the magazine in the left hand corner.
Institution - Secondary Teachers and TeachersNet.Gov.Uk
Ideology - The ideology for this magazine is education, pupils and teachers. The magazine informs them all about education and schools.
Audience - Teachers and students. People who are interested in the education system. Teachers because they will want to know what students want to learn, and students because this might help them further their education. People who are interested in education will find this magazine interesting because its just full of education. This magazine could also interest other genres of people, but mainly these type of people are the focus when the people are writing and composing the front cover of this magazine. Both male and female read it.
Representation - The people being represented in this magazine are students. This is prooved because of the front cover of the magazine. On the front is a young school girl, this means that students when they look at this magazine might think of buying it because there is someone similar to them on the front cover. College life is also represented, for example if you take drama, the picture of the girl shows a drama interpretation.  This will also make drama students want to buy it.

LIIAR Interpretation Of The Brief

  • Language = Whats on the magazine (E.G Masthead, Subheadings, Slogans)
  • Institution = The company/orginization that creates the magazine
  • Ideology= Why they use that text, image and if there is a hidden meaning
  • Audience = Who reads the magazine? Target Audience, This usually depends on gender, age or occupation
  • Representation= Whats been represented, so is it been postivley potrayed, or is a company been represented?

The Brief

Using desk top publisher and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock up of the layoutof the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of desk top publisher.
